There’s something about a skirt that just gets me.
I hate to play favorites, but of all the pieces in my wardrobe, I just love the skirt. She’s who I reach for when I want to feel dressed up.
I’ve always been partial to skirts. Back in junior high and high school, they were of the Benetton variety, paired with matching sweaters in saturated colors. When I started teaching, they were barely-there mini skirts—with tights. Skirts so short that I hastily threw on jackets when the superintendent paid a visit.
And now? I still love a skirt. I’m partial to a good column these days—that elongated silhouette paired with a cashmere and a pointed kitten heel. Chef’s kiss. But honestly? I find that I’m reaching for leggings and jeans more often—taking the easy way out.
After watching Prada’s SS27 Milan runway show? The skirt? She’s tugging at my heartstrings once again.
Prada paraded 63 iterations of the skirt down their Milan catwalk. The end result? The cat’s meow.
What Prada did may have been brilliant, but it wasn’t magic. They took a simple object and built 63 looks around it. Because sometimes, freshness doesn’t require reinvention. Sometimes it requires looking at the familiar differently.
Prada gave us sheer, embellished, ruffled, swinging, slit, tight, loose. The skirt served it all. And the top? Well, it took a back seat and let the skirt steal the spotlight. Simple sweaters—often black—bra tops and bandeaus let the skirt shine. And shine, she did.
And maybe that’s the point. The skirt doesn’t need a reinvention. She just needs another turn.
Mini. Midi. Column. Pleated. Embellished. A little sheer. A little prim. A little bit not.
