On the Slate: The Summer Uniform

The formula remains the same: tee, tank, denim, blazer, shirt. The color story changes everything.

Swap black for slate grey. Add a whisper of pale blue. Ground it all with rich chocolate accessories.

Suddenly, the familiar feels entirely new.

Lean on a lighter blazer—light colors read better during June, July, and August—and thinner layers, like organza, to top your go-to white tanks and tees. rag & bone’s Jolene organza blazer has been on my wishlist for weeks. Rendered in a light blue-grey and also in black, it’s literally flying off the shelves. Organza is the perfect layering piece for warmer weather and indoor office air conditioning, and the slate color is the foundation for a swoon-worthy and unexpected summer color palette.

Add light-wash denim to the queue—white is always a fresh option—or pair your basic whites with a cutoff denim or linen short. While rag & bone’s Saige jean is an old standby, I am dying to try their newly introduced Cam relaxed straight jean. Low rise and feather weight, Cam had me at hello.

Adding an unexpected element—in this case, slate grey—to the daily uniform keeps your outfit fresh. To truly make it styled—not just worn—ground grey with darker accessories.

Black? Expected.
Chocolate? Delicious.
It anchors the lighter blues, greys, and whites, and keeps them from drifting away.

Accessories provide punctuation and are the easiest way to finish your outfit with an exclamation point. Add tortoise shell sunglasses, distressed brown ballet flats, or a chestnut tote.

It’s that unexpected, grounding touch of chocolate that keeps a pale summer palette from floating out to sea.
Anchor down.
