Summer Styled

Summer—I was listening to The Good Buy, one of my favorite podcasts, earlier this morning, and two of fashion’s best dressed, Tessa Thompson and Harper’s Bazaar’s Lynette Nylander, declared that summer is their least favorite season to dress for. I’ve heard Liv Perez of Let’s Get Dressed lament the same.

Because summer? It’s softer, more exposed than fall and winter’s layered looks. Peel back those layers, and you’re more vulnerable.

But the sultrier season doesn’t have to be difficult. Transition your fall/winter uniform—a white tee, denim, a blazer, a structured shoe. Pair it back to the basics: a white tee or tank, denim, a lighter outer layer, and a flat or sandal. Add a fun accessory and a little bit of texture.

What have I been relying on so far this summer? A white tee or tank—thank you, Renggli—has become the backbone of my summer wardrobe. I’m loving their cropped white tee (I like it so much I got it in ice blue, too), their white long-sleeve tee, and their new v-neck tank. The magic lies in their weight—just right to hold structure and look polished. Thank you, Morgan. I wouldn’t expect any less of you. All are wearable basics that pair beautifully with denim.

Summer denim should shed some of its winter skin. I opt for a cutoff, a cropped light wash, or a lightweight, cuffed boyfriend for June, July, and August. White denim is always a summer staple. These months have legs—don’t be afraid to show yours, too. If shorts aren’t for you? Bare an ankle, at least.

Once you have the basics down—your tee or tank and shorts or cropped denim—shoes are easy. Summer shoes are all about ease. Slip into a flip-flop or a raffia slide. A ballet flat adds structure to your denim, and a pointed toe always elongates the leg. Who doesn’t want that? If you want to elevate your outfit, a kitten heel mule or sandal is the perfect addition.

I almost always opt for a light layer—an airy blazer, a button-down, or a cardigan or sweater thrown over my shoulders. It gives some much-needed warmth when stepping indoors into frosty air conditioning. An added bonus? It also elevates your entire look.

Suddenly, summer’s in the bag.
